Feast of St. Dominic Savio

On 6^thJuly, 2011 Don Bosco School - Matunga celebrated the feast of St. Dominic Savio with a mass for all the catholic school children in the Shrine, followed by the Installation of the School captains and monitors. It was a grand occasion for the school to have its new leaders. The NCC, RSP and the Scouts also joined the School captains and monitors in their Oath ceremony. The School Council was then invested by Fr. Rector and Fr. Bosco. The monitors were invested by Fr. Derrick and the Teachers. The Office bearers for the Academic year 2011 – 2012 were: School Captain: Shannon Noguira and Vice Captain Pratik Mohapatra

The boarding also had its installation ceremony in the evening. The Boarding captain - Nigel, vice - captain - Royden and the four house leaders Rinaldo, Ryan, Edward and Allan were then invested by Fr. Jude, with the medals of Our Lady as a sign of leaders in the boarding. The Installation ceremony was then followed by the Savio Nite with its interesting games, quiz, skits, ads and various competitions. The Feast of St. Dominic Savio ended with the giving away of prizes to the teams which participated in the Dominic Savio Week.

SWEET SWEET SUCCESS

Amid congratulatory handshakes and pats on the back, came the news of the cent percent SSC result, which suddenly changed the normal afternoon of 14^thJune to an exciting one. All seemed to wait expectantly wanting to know more and the news that poured in sure made the spirits soar high. The happiness was visible on the faces of all alike- teachers and students.

Many of our SSC boys, promptly came to share their success with their Alma Mater.

‘Don Bosco - Matunga excels!’ is a phrase often heard in our campus, and it was proved once again when the Hindustan Times - dated September 20, 2010(in an independently conducted survey), ranked the school amongst the Top 10 Schools of Mumbai. Moving up several notches from last year’s rankings brought much joy to the entire institute! What made it even more special was the fact that the Institute received the highest ratings for its Social Engagement, Selection Process, Sports and Value for Money. While acknowledging everyone – management, staff, parents and students, for the tremendous effort in reaching this new milestone, we cannot forget the fact that such heights would not have been achieved without the vision, commitment and dedication of generations of Salesians, staff, parents and students who have over the years consistently been raising the bar of education in this institute.

BOSCO KALA UTSAV

‘Keep innovating, Keep motivating, Keep moving ahead’, is the underlining principle at Don Bosco High School, Matunga.

With our Principal, Rev. Fr. Bosco D’Mello at the helm of affairs, the mundane co-curricular activities, wore a festive look and were christened ‘Bosco Kala Utsav’.

Co-curricular Activities are held all through the year at different intervals. This affected the academic progress of the school. It was therefore decided to club all these activities, include those held at inter-school/ward level and add interesting suggestions that were offered.

After days of meeting, debating and meticulous planning the Bosco Kala Utsav took off on 23rd and 24th August 2010. These were non-instructional days filled with team spirit, learning, fun and entertainment for all.

The array of activities now were: Choral Recitation, Elocution – Hindi / Marathi / English, Debates, Spelling Bee, General Quiz, Group Singing- Patriotic Song, Folk Dance, Music Vocals – Indian & Western, Mad Ad Jingle, Antakshari, Mock Rock, I’ve Got Talent, Art & Craft that were all held in the two days that were set aside for them.

The bonus points that the Bosco Kala Utsav earned was the ‘home-coming’ of our Past Pupils to judge the events. On being interviewed, the one word they echoed aloud was AWESOME! They were happy to observe that the school marched with the times and fortified their students with the much needed confidence for the future.

Everyone participated in the Bosco Kala Utsav as one big family – Management, staff and students! One could see growth around. The spectacular festival with food for the mind, music and dance for body and soul and a whole lot of positive energy, was everybody’s delight. The whole event ended with the boys spontaneously breaking into song and the air filled with strains of ‘Raise your Voices’ in gratitude to our father Don Bosco.

Don Bosco - Matunga have begun the new scholastic year in style by capturing the first tournament of the year – the M.S.S.A. U–16 football tournament for boys. Having dominated the league, they maintained their stranglehold of the super league by not loosing a single game, and even managed to defeat old rivals St. Stanislaus 6 – 0. Special mention must be made of ‘keeper Mahir Singh who managed to maintain a clean sheet under the bar right through the tournament and deservingly won the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament as well as Byrian Corriea who won the Best Defender award. More than just winning a tournament, it was the manner in which they achieved it that speaks volumes of the tenacity of the boys. With malaria in the air, the Unit Tests in progress, and the District level matches being played simultaneously, the Bosco boys took it all in their stride and proved why Don Bosco - Matunga is referred to as the ‘football power house’ of Mumbai!

New Hope, New Ideas, New Drive

The rains might be lashing the city of Mumbai these days, but that was no deterrent to the parents and boys of the Don Bosco Night Study Classes who gathered with great enthusiasm for the inauguration of the Night Study Classes for this year. With “New Hope, New Ideas, New Drive” as their theme for the year, Fr. Bosco D’Mello reminded both the boys and the parents of the value of starting every undertaking with new hope, fresh ideas and drive that will take them to their cherished goals. With everyone working together, their dreams will definitely take flight. All that they need is to wake up to new self belief. The boys seemed to know exactly what was expected of them as they entertained their parents with a song and dance performance from the movie ‘Wake Up SID’. The SSC boys of the previous year (who scored a cent per cent again) were also felicitated.

A Diamond set in GOLD !

The 1st. of July 2010 was a Golden day for everyone in the campus of Don Bosco - Matunga as confreres and boys gathered to wish Rev. Fr. Richard D’Souza on the Golden jubilee anniversary of his Ordination.

Fifty years ago, after having completed his Ecclesial studies at the Sacred Heart College - Mawlai, Shillong and receiving his Ministries from Bp. Ferrando, Fr. Richard was ordained a Priest in Yercaud by Bp. Selvanathan. A few days later, on 7th. July 1960 with, “In Generosity Is LOVE” as his motto and a prayer on his lips for his dearly departed father, Fr. Richard offered his first Thanksgiving Eucharist along with his loved ones in Mangalore. Ever since that day it has been a continues outpouring of HIS love through the Priestly hands of Fr. Richard wherever he has been – Tamil Nadu, Goa, Maharashtra . . . .

At the Eucharistic celebration which was attended by confrere from all parts of the Province, Fr. Richard recalled the words of our Blessed Mother “The Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name”, as truly being his own. He looked back with gratitude to God for his departed loved ones, the people with whom he worked with and for, and acknowledged all who have helped him derive comfort and consolation from his priesthood. He also renewed the appeal of Pope Benedict XVI for vocations as the year of the Priesthood concluded. To all those present at the Eucharist, he expressed his gratitude in the words of Psalm 102: “My soul give thanks to the Lord, bless his Holy Name. . . . . . . . . . . . . never forget all His blessings”.

Later that evening, our Provincial, Rev. Fr. Michael Fernandes thanked Fr. Richard for all he is to the province while regaling everyone present with long forgotten snippets from the life of Fr. Richard. The celebration, which was attended by members of the Salesian family as well as his own, was truly a joyous celebration.

This year is special for Fr. Richard for another reason as well. It also marks 60 years of his life as a Salesian. A diamond and golden jubilee year together is certainly a blessing to be grateful for. As he concluded in his homily, “God you are great, and I am grateful”.

Don Bosco - Matunga produced another magnificent result at the SSC Board Exams this year. Having adopted a policy that shepherds the weaker students over the years, and insistence that no child be left behind (much before it became a fashionable idea!), the Bosco boys did their Alma Mater proud for one last time as students. Below is a summary of the results.

Passed – 307

School percentage – 99.6%

90% and above – 50

85 – 89.9% - 53

75 – 84.9% - 86

2nd. Class - 25

At the school assembly; the Principal, Fr. Bosco D’Mello, reminded the boys that such results would not have been possible without the foresight, dedication, hard work and sacrifice of the faculty; which of course led to a long round of applause for all the staff members! The students were reminded of the virtue of systematic preparation for success in any endeavor in life.

The student with the highest percentage in the school was Nagar Kaustubh with 98.5%

Among the boarders, the highest percentage was Dias Hansel with 85.9%, a truly commendable effort.

The Night Study boys’ result was equally impressive. After residing in the institute for the whole month preceding the exams, all 22 boys passed with Salman Khan leading the way with 85%

The alumni unit of Don Bosco - Matunga too was present that evening and the next day helping the students get their papers certified by Mr. Jeeghar L. Karani an S. E. O. and a past pupil himself!

New day, new year, new YOU ?

The day began like any other Monday morning in the city of Mumbai, except that, in Matunga there was an obvious buzz that this Monday was different. The campus had seen the boarders arrive the previous evening and by 9:00 am the school was alive once again, filled with boys fresh from their holidays, eager to begin a new year. “The holidays”, as Don Bosco would say, “is just a change of occupation”. And true to the Salesian charisma, the months of April and May saw hectic repairs and renovation of different parts of the various buildings in the campus – all done for the betterment of the child. And that was certainly noticeable in the wide and bright eyes of the boys when they saw their freshly painted classrooms, corridors, school offices, staff rooms and even their principal’s office! At the start of the new scholastic year, a new look will certainly help the students to begin school life anew!

Don Bosco – Matunga goes to the polls.

Posters, speeches and canvassing were the order of the day as the students of Don Bosco - Matunga went to the polls to elect their leaders for the new scholastic year 2010 – 2011. After a careful scrutiny of the candidates by the Election Commission (a panel of staff members) earlier, the candidates were allowed to propose their vision for the school if elected to the various posts. All the students with valid I D s (the Hand Books with their photographs on them), were allowed to cast their vote. If you were imagining ballot papers and boxes, then think again! Always on the cutting edge of progress, the boys at Don Bosco - Matunga cast their precious votes by logging onto their computers, with their name, class, division and roll number before exercising their franchise. The process was free of error, ecologically sound, and instantaneous. Fr. Roy Noronha, Vice – Principal ( and Chief Election Commissioner ! ) over saw the whole proceeds of the day and declared that it was a free and fair election, with the electorate showing great maturity. Needless to say, everyone was rejoicing when the results were announced. At the end of the day the corridors were filled with chants of Bosco, Bosco, Bosco, Don Bosco!

As another scholastic year comes to a close, Don Bosco – Matunga added one more piece of silverware to our over crowded trophy cabinet - the Jesal Niranjan Ganjawalla Trophy for the Best School in Sports in Mumbai. It is one both players and coaches look forward to, at the end of each year, and it has been ours for the 9th. consecutive year!
